Bay of Islands
There is so much to do in the Bay of Islands and wider Northland area. Find out more about the area by visiting www.northlandnz.com – but first, we’ve put some ideas together for you here!
History and Culture
Visit the Waitangi Treaty Grounds to learn about the birth of the nation and early Maori culture. Enjoy Northland’s food and wine trail, including custom tours, winery trips and local farmers’ markets in Paihia and Kerikeri.
On the water
There are numerous options for spending time on the water, from the famous dolphin cruises, a relaxing day sail to the islands, a fast boat to the Hole in the Rock, or perhaps kayaking and diving.
On the Land
Land activities include golfing at Waitangi’s scenic golf course, coastal and bush walks, horse trekking and visits to the nearby townships of Russell (by ferry) and Kawakawa. Or take a road trip to New Zealand’s northern tip – Cape Reinga.
In the Air
Enjoy the bay from above with a parasail, a skydive or a scenic flight or helicopter ride.
Bars and Restaurants
So many to choose from! How about local's favourite, Alfresco, on a Sunday afternoon for some live music or 35 Degrees South to sample their excellent wine list at sundown. Try Only Seafood for its catch of the day, or the Duke of Marlborough over in Russell for some magical history and top dining. Whatever you do, don't leave the Bay without a great coffee and brunch at Waikokopu Cafe in Waitangi.
